VIA Rail Ridership Data 2023-2025

I originally posted some ridership data from 2023 that I received through a freedom of information request. I did so for a silly reason.

I quickly realized that this was the only place on the web you could find this information. So I’ve made a few more FOI requests and here is the data from 2024 and 2025 as well.

It turns out that Miles and I were 66.7% of all the boardings at Abbotsford station in 2025. No wonder, the train comes at 2am and takes 6 hours to do a 1-hour journey. You should watch the video of us boarding there, it is fun.

Here is all the ridership data from 2023 to 2025 together in one spreadsheet (xlsx).

Some notes:

  • I didn’t request the whole year of 2023, so I only have Jan-Oct. I suppose someone could ask for the whole year – if you do, please email me and I can add it.
  • If you’re looking for the least used station, I suspect there are many more active stations that have zero users, and you might be able to find them in the second tab. It’s kind of hard to know which stations are still active. I suppose you could try to book a ticket to one of them and see what happens.
